HOW CAN GREEN FINANCE FOSTER SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN THE AGE OF COVID-19?

Currently, the Covid 19 pandemic poses a serious global threat but also an opportunity for a "great recovery". In particular, the development of green finance - financial instruments designed to promote environmental and social goals needs considerable attention in order to promote the green economy.
A central role for sustainable recovery
According to Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2021, released by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the green financial system has played a central role in sustainable recovery in the past few years, especially through changes in business preferences. According to statistics:
  • More than $30 trillion, relevant to a third of global wealth, is being managed with environmental, social, and governance considerations.
  • 30% is the average number of environmental performance improvement after issuing green bonds
  • Businesses with better stock value and better resilience during the pandemic after using green finance
Green finance development trend for energy projects in Vietnam
In recent years, the energy demand in Vietnam has been constantly growing and in this context, the Government and the Ministry of Industry and Trade have promoted more renewable energy and this requires large capital requirements. Therefore, the green financial system, which includes the issuance of green bonds, is considered an effective tool to promote renewable energy development and contribute to sustainable development in Vietnam, especially in the context of the global Covid-19 pandemic.
