WHAT TYPE OF SOLUTIONS ARE NEEDED FOR ENERGY TRANSITION IN VIETNAM ?
The increasing variability of loads and the integration of renewable energy with a greater proportion ask for new requirements for system flexibility that can be provided by four main solutions.
1. Battery Energy Storage System
Stored hydroelectricity and Lithium-ion batteries are the two largest forms of storage so far. Although investment costs are still relatively high, it has tended to decrease in recent years. The PDP 8 of the MoIT indicates that: Large-scale battery storage batteries will be economically viable from 2030 onwards.
2. Load Adjustment (Demand Response - DR)
Including a wide range of technologies that shift, or cut load at any given time. It will help change electricity demand and can reduce peak load capacity during peak hours.
3. System link
Combining generation sources through linking transmission networks improves flexibility, reduces net load variability, and addresses the challenge of changing renewable energy sources. This will be a solution for the Vietnamese grid, but it will take time to develop.
4. Flexible generating sets
It is the most versatile source of power systems, the most practical and feasible to balance wind and solar energy sources.
All the above four flexible sources have their roles in the power system and the benefits of these sources need to be assessed in each period of the Vietnamese power system.

Viet Nam has faced power shortage due to the unstable world energy market and the extreme weather, affecting the production enterprises, especially those in the industrial production sector. Surveys from the National Energy Efficiency Program for the period of 2019-2030 show that the potential for energy saving in the industrial sector in Viet Nam is about approx. 20% - 30% of total energy consumption.
