BP38 - Solar water heater

Address: Thuan An, Binh Duong Province
Name of the Manager: Mr. Ngoc
Project Summary: A footwear company in Binh Duong Province has installed a solar water heating system for supplying preheated feedwater to the oil-fired boiler. The program objective is to reduce energy costs and greenhouse-gas (GHG) emission.
Year of implementation: 2018

Status before implementation

The plant used a diesel oil-fired boiler for supplying steam to the canteen area. The boiler had a capacity of 1.5 tons/hour

The boiler was operating under low load mode as it only operated for about 4.5 hours/day (3 hours in the morning and 1.5 hours in the afternoon).

Average steam quantity supplied during the survey period was 1,779 kgs/day. Oil consumption was 254 kgs of DO/day.

Due to the low load operation, the boiler efficiency was remarkably low (43.1% - calculated by the direct method).

Plant’s boiler and steam supply diagram

Result

The plant has installed a solar water heating system for supplying preheated feedwater to the boiler. A solar water heating system has a capacity of 6 m3/day (Khang Dai supplier).

In addition, the plant has optimized the boiler blowdown, and after implementation, the recorded quantity of feedwater is about 3.75 m3/day. The hot water temperature from the solar water heating system is over 650C during the survey period.

Solar water heater and operating parameters

The boiler efficiency after implementing the energy saving solution is 62% (calculated by the direct method).
