BP27 - Replace chiller use piston by screw

Project Summary: Replacement of Chillers using a reciprocating compressor with Chillers using high efficiency screw compressor.
Year of implementation: 2016

Status before implementation

The hotel and office building area's refrigeration system used 5 Chillers with reciprocating compressors. Each Chiller has a capacity of 244 kW. The refrigerant is R22, the heat transfer fluid is water.

However, due to long operating time, some Chillers’ compressors have failed. 1 Chiller has been ceased its operation due to the lack of spare parts.

Chiller No. 3 and Chiller No. 5 of centralized air conditioning system in the hotel

Refrigeration compressors worked with relatively low efficiency (COP of 2.7 to 3).

The daily power consumption of the air conditioning system was 9,855 kWh.

Result

The hotel has replaced the Chiller system using reciprocating compressor with the Chiller using high efficiency screw compressor.

The daily electricity consumption of the air conditioning system after renovation is 3,156 kWh.

The COP of the new chiller system is quite high (from 6 to 6.2).
